Abstract Scope Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has recently emerged as a new method for online composition monitoring in melting/holding furnaces. Such a technology could have a positive EHS impact (less human interaction with liquid metal), but also increase productivity and reduce the carbon footprint of furnaces by measuring composition quicker and earlier than conventional techniques thereby shortening furnace cycles. LIBS could also be used to help optimize recycled content in cast products. Industrial deployment of liquid LIBS in casthouses can be done using a surface measurement probe or sub-surface lance probe; both designs should be resistant to a high temperature atmosphere. Calibration is critical for the accuracy and reproducibility of the measurement. This work summarizes Constellium-Tecnar and Constellium-DTE co-developments to implement LIBS technology for wrought aluminum alloys. Promising results show the possibility of following master alloy dissolution in the melt; industrialization challenges are discussed for both technologies.
