Abstract Scope Particle impact testing is extensively used for studies including cold spray, particle erosion and bonding, but increasingly, impacts are also being used to measure mechanical properties. Extracting properties such as strength or hardness from impact observations is an inverse problem with many variables. Using finite element modeling of impacts at high velocities and ultra-high strain rates, we explore a variety of variables that can be intentionally tuned in experiment. Velocity, material mismatch, the constitutive properties of the test materials, and the impact angle are all considered, and opportunities to extract dynamic yield strengths and related properties are discussed. The connection between complex materials' constitutive behavior and simpler experimental metrics, such as the coefficient of restitution or the impact hardness, are also explored to provide guidelines for the assessment of material properties from experimental data.
