Abstract Scope |
Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is a highly efficient liquid metal coolant with promising applications in advanced nuclear reactors. However, the corrosive nature of LBE on various nuclear-grade steels presents a significant challenge for its implementation in actual nuclear reactors. Previous studies have shown that deformation-induced twin boundaries can accelerate the penetration of LBE into steel. In our research, we employed 4D-STEM to investigate the intergranular corrosion of austenitic stainless steel by LBE at the nanoscale. By analyzing 4D-STEM data, we generated a series of virtual bright-field and dark-field images and performed advanced quantitative analyses, such as strain mapping and orientation mapping. These analyses provided a more comprehensive understanding of the corrosion mechanism and helped visualize the damage along grain boundaries. Our study contributes to a deeper understanding of the LBE corrosion in austenitic stainless steels, crucial for developing mitigation strategies and promoting the safe implementation of LBE in advanced nuclear reactors. |
