Abstract Scope |
In Al-Zn-Mg alloys, hydrogen embrittlement (HE) is most marked when the distribution of grain boundary precipitates (DGBP) becomes fine, which usually takes place in peak- and under-aged tempers. However, there is no such report on the behavior of HE in Al-Cu-Mg alloys in relation to DGBP, particularly when the distribution is as fine as that of peak- and under-aged Al-Zn-Mg alloys. We have been studying the relationship between DGBP and HE in an Al-4%Cu-1.5%Mg alloy. Solutionized specimens were aged at 40 to 190ºC for durations up to 10000 min, and subjected to transmission electron microscopy with close attention to DGBP to find aging conditions where DGBP is compatible with that in peak- or under-aged Al-Zn-Mg alloys, in addition to hardness test. Under such aging conditions, the resistance to HE was evaluated, to draw a conclusion on the relationship between DGBP and HE in Al-Cu-Mg alloys. |
