Grain size refinement has been an attraction in TiNi-based shape memory alloys owing to their benefits in preventing the loss of recoverable strain. The current study elucidates the role of rolling temperature on grain refinement in TiNiCu shape memory alloy. The stored energies in the rolled samples have been regulated by varying the deformation temperature from ambient conditions to 0 °C to cryogenic temperatures. The as-rolled samples exhibit the deformation-induced austenite phase below the martensite finish temperatures. Because of this, the phase transformation is suppressed in the as-rolled condition, and they display constant electrical resistivity values. After heat treatment of these samples at similar conditions, grain sizes ranging from a few hundred nm to tens of microns are achieved, and the B2→B19' transformation is restored. In-situ TEM studies of electron beam induced irradiation revealed the self-propagation of pre-existing austenite phase in as-rolled samples of a martensitic NiTiCu shape memory alloy. |
