Phase transformations in ceramics play a critical role in developing new materials such as metastable phases or structures that exhibit desirable properties for technological applications. This talk presents recent experimental investigations on phase transformations in ceramic materials that are triggered by swift heavy ion irradiation and/or high energy ball milling. Simple oxide (AO, A2O3, AO2) materials were exposed to 5-10 MeV/nucleon heavy ions and/or processed by high energy ball milling. Detailed characterization was performed by synchrotron X-ray diffraction and neutron total scattering techniques to gain insight into the multi-scale structural modifications that evolve with ion fluence and milling time. Varying parameters such as ion species, energy, milling tool materials, and operating speed, a variety of phase transformations were observed, including transitions to metastable high-temperature and high-pressure polymorphs that are otherwise non-recoverable. These results contribute toward an improved understanding on the highly transient extremes associated with ion irradiation and ball milling. |
