Vickers microhardness measurement shows indentation size effect (ISE) or reverse indentation size effect (RISE) wherein the hardness decreases in the former and increases in the latter with increasing load before reaching a plateau. This depends on various factors, such as, the materials tested, active deformation mechanisms, surface condition, and test methods. There is a requirement to evaluate the alpha case using Vickers microhardness in titanium alloys. In this regard, the load dependence of the Vickers Micro-Indentation hardness test was investigated on the Titanium alloy Ti5Al2.5Sn for a base line. While testing Ti5Al2.5Sn using loads ranging from 10 gf to 1 kgf, it was found that the titanium alloy exhibits a normal ISE. The experimental data was fitted to the models Meyer’s Law, Hays-Kendall, Elastic/Plastic Deformation, Proportional Specimen resistance, and the Modified Proportional Specimen Resistance. It appears that the elastic/plastic deformation model could explain the experimental results. |
