Abstract Scope |
Classification of structural materials for next generation molten-salt reactors must consider corrosion of the salt-facing components. This study combines additively manufactured (AM) high-throughput materials characterization with molten salt corrosion to demonstrate the effects of hafnium dopants on corrosion behavior. The AM 316L stainless steel was submerged in eutectic NaCl-MgCl2 molten salt at 700 °C for 30 and 240 h. The morphology and microstructure of the gradient region after the corrosion test were analyzed using SEM-EDS to understand the intergranular corrosion and quantify Cr leaching and corrosion rates. In addition, TEM was used to characterize corrosion by-products. The resulting data will show increased attack of grain boundaries as a function of time, and the effect of Hf on reducing corrosion rates. |
