Abstract Scope |
Traditionally, encapsulation with nanoparticles has been associated with high value application such as drug delivery in medicine. The main reasons have been 1) the high cost of assembly processes for complex nanoparticles that encapsulate and release actives in a controlled way, and 2) the fact that encapsulation technologies for micro-particles do not directly translate to nano-scale particles. Nevertheless, recent advances in cost-effective techniques for nanoparticle synthesis present the opportunity to open up new applications. We will present a rapid-precipitation platform called Flash NanoPrecipitation, which relies on the control of the fluid dynamics, diffusion-limited aggregation, and steric stabilization of nanoparticles. The platform is continuous, scalable and produces nanoparticles of 50-400 nm. The potential will be highlighted with examples of 1) encapsulation of difficult-to-delivery therapeutics for low-cost nanomedicine in global health; 2) formulation of thermal-triggered indicator inks for sterilization processes; 3) nanoparticle delivery of agricultural actives to plant roots by active transport. |
