| Abstract Scope |
Solidification and microstructure evolution of martensitic stainless steels for various cooling rates are surveyed. A lower hardness than that of the air cooling is often observed for rapidly solidified samples. Experimental and thermodynamics analysis of cooling rate on segregation and solid-state transformations is conducted. Delta ferrite is found to be retained more significantly for a faster cooling rate. The martensitic start temperature is found to be suppressed to below the room temperature for a faster cooling rate. A possible mechanism for the observed lower hardness of the as-deposit microstructure is proposed. Implications for potential crack-resistant deposits of these air-quenchable steels are discussed. |
