Abstract Scope |
Presented will be a study on the characterization of CeO2 pellets doped with low wt% (0.05% - 1.5%) carbon or europia, fabricated by powder metallurgy and pressing CeO2 + (C,Eu2O3) pellets. Pellets were sintered in an air box furnace at 1600 °C, before being cross sectioned and polished. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), the microstructure was analysed and the grain size, porosity was recorded. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) was utilized to collect the elemental map across the CeO2 + (C,Eu2O3) matrix. XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) was used to assess changes in the sample diffractogram due to the increasing concentration of carbon or europia. Photoluminescence peaks were collected to detect europia signal. Kr was implanted in CeO2 + Eu2O3 pellets and analysed by ToF-ERDA (Time-of-Flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis). The study aims to inform on the solubility of light elements and relevant fission products in oxide fuels using a surrogate approach. |
