Abstract Scope |
Spinal fixation (SF) surgery is critical in returning stability back to patients suffering from spinal fractures with pedicle screw fixation surgery being the gold standard for SF surgery. This procedure's efficacy; however, tends to decrease in people suffering from low bone mineral density (BMD) (e.g., osteoporosis). Due to lack of dexterity associated with current rigid drilling instruments, RPS are forced to be fixate into areas of low BMD leading to RPS pullout. In this paper, we introduce a novel flexible pedicle screws (FPS) that is capable of morphing to bypass low BMD regions of the vertebra for spinal fixation. Two FPS of different sizes were then additive manufactured using stainless steel (316L) through direct metal laser sintering. Finally, the fabricated FPS were then experimentally evaluated and a sensitivity analysis was done to compared the experimental results with finite element analysis (FEA) simulation. |
