In this study, deformation distributions in polycrystalline materials have been characterised by a combination of high-resolution EBSD, electron channelling contrast imaging (ECCI), and in-situ digital image correlation (DIC). Along with crystal plasticity finite element analysis (CPFEM) simulations, we propose a multi-correlative case study on a Inconel 718 Ni superalloy.
In-situ DIC analysis gives the evolution of strain distribution: we explored speckle patterns from FIB and decoration with colloidal silica suspension. Post-test characterisation with ECCI and controlled g vector and b vector allows discrete dislocations and their spatial distribution to be imaged and assessed in individual grains. HR-EBSD gives more quantitative measurement of residual elastic strains and dislocation densities. Outputs from these different experimental modalities have been compared and are in broad agreement with each other and CPFEM simulations which provide local stresses driving deformation to the final material state which we have characterised in detail. |
