Abstract Scope |
As Cu, Sn, and other residual elements increasingly accumulate in steel scrap streams, resultant processing challenges such as hot-shortness present a barrier to more efficient scrap utilization via electric-arc furnace remelting. This work aims to evaluate the influences of thermomechanical processing (TMP) parameters – time, temperature, atmosphere, and strain / strain rate – on the behavior of a variety of Cu-bearing steels spanning several product categories. Approaches include simulating TMP pathways using a Gleeble and laboratory hot-rolling experiments, and developing a Cu enrichment model to predict the formation kinetics of a Cu-rich liquid phase during oxidation. Results obtained from LOM, SEM, EDS, TGA, and mechanical property characterization will be used to develop secondary steel compositions and production pathways with increased tolerance to residual elements. |
