Abstract Scope |
Al-Ce alloys are promising for high-temperature aerospace applications due to the presence of thermally stable Al11Ce3 phase. They have shown excellent potential for use in Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD). During AFSD, Al11Ce3 lamellae in the Al-Ce eutectic microstructure break into smaller, evenly dispersed particles. Additionally, the effects of adding Mg and Zr were studied to include solid solution and precipitation strengthening, in addition to composite strengthening provided by the eutectic structure. The extent of particle reduction and dispersion correlates with deposition parameters. Optimization of the AFSD process revealed correlations between hardness, room temperature tensile properties, and elevated temperature tensile properties. Microstructural evolution from various AFSD depositions was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), small-scale tensile testing, and profilometry-based indentation (PIP), showing property tunability through parameter modification. |
