Abstract Scope |
A high number density Al-like medium range order (MRO) regions as a spatial heterogeneity in Al88Y7Fe5 metallic glass act as a catalyst to promote primary crystallization. With the delay time measurement by Flash DSC and the Al nanocrystal density measurement during isothermal annealing treatments by TEM, an MRO-seeded nucleation kinetics model is established. The calculated values of the steady state nucleation rates (Jss) predicted by the nucleation model agree with the experimental results. Compared to Al88Y7Fe5, both Al87Y7Fe5Cu and Al87Y7Fe5Co exhibit an increased the delay time under same isothermal annealing treatment. With the same model, it is possible to analysis nucleation kinetics in Al87Y7Fe5Cu and Al87Y7Fe5Co and understand the reason for the thermal stability improvement. These developments offer new opportunities for the control of nanoscale microstructures and provide guidance to obtain bulk volumes in Al-based metallic glasses. |
