About this Abstract
Meeting 2025 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Preparing Undergraduate and Graduate Students - And the Faculty Who Prepare Them - For Materials Careers (A Symposium Held in the Memory and Honor of Elizabeth Judson)
Presentation Title Student Learning Through Performing Materials Science and Engineering Research in a Foreign Country
Author(s) Carl J. Boehlert
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Carl J. Boehlert
Abstract Scope The results of a successful NSF International Research Experience for Students (IRES) program will be showcased in this presentation. Through this award, 19 Michigan State University students were engaged in collaborative international research with the IMDEA Materials Institute in Madrid, Spain over the course of the 2002, 2023, and 2024 summers. The IMDEA mentors were world leaders in physical and mechanical metallurgy, and modeling of advanced alloys, and the research projects involved investigation of biomaterials, additive manufacturing, solidification, advanced computational and experimental methods, etc. The students were able to build professional and personal networks with scientists from all over the world and obtained new perspectives to prepare them for a variety of future careers in which collaborations with European agencies are desirable. This program exposed the students to a different approach to research as well as to everyday life in a different culture.
