Abstract Scope |
Uranium boride has gained attention in recent years as a potential nuclear fuel for its high thermal conductivity, high uranium loading, and ability to be used as a burnable absorber as a composite with uranium dioxide. However, uranium boride synthesis methods employable at an industrial scale as well as uranium borides behavior at accident significant conditions are largely uninvestigated. In this work, we investigate the synthesis of uranium diboride and uranium tetraboride via a boro/carbothermic reduction reaction as well as the oxidation behavior of uranium boride when alloyed with chromium. Furthermore, synchrotron characterization methods will be used to investigate the phase stability with temperature of air oxidized uranium tetraboride and uranium diboride when alloyed with chromium. This work, in addition to demonstrating the effect of chromium alloying on uranium borides oxidation behavior, shows the practicality of use of synchrotron characterization techniques for nuclear fuels characterization and qualification. |
