Abstract Scope This work builds upon previous studies of wear-enhanced corrosion resistance of additively manufactured (AM) stainless steels. Here, directed energy deposition (DED) is used to produce a SEM-EDS verified composition gradient from super-austenitic AL-6XN to austenitic 316L stainless steel in the build direction. Tribocorrosion testing at several applied anodic potentials in a salt water environment reveals a wear-enhanced corrosion resistance aligned with the PREN gradient, as illustrated by spatially resolved current response and wear rates. Qualitatively, SEM imaging reveals an appreciably greater corrosion damage on the low PREN region of the build. These observations are confirmed using white-light profilometry which reveals an increased material loss at the 316L side of approximately 50% compared to the AL-6XN side.
