Abstract Scope |
The commercial copper (Cu) production process has environmental concerns such as the generation of a large amount of sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas. To overcome such issues, a novel Cu production process by utilizing the electrolytic method was investigated to produce Cu metal and elemental sulfur (S2) from chalcocite (Cu2S). The electrolysis of Cu2S in eutectic copper chloride (CuCl) – potassium chloride (KCl) molten salt was carried out with a current density of 10 – 40 mA/cm2 at 473 K for 1.5 – 24 h. In the experiments, the average cell voltage measured was in the range of 0.51 – 0.66 V, and Cu metal with a purity of 99.92 % was obtained with a current efficiency of 96.1 % under certain conditions. Therefore, the developed electrolytic process is feasible for efficient and eco-friendly Cu metal production from Cu2S. |
