Abstract Scope |
Known as "red mud," bauxite residue results from the aluminum production process, with between 7 to 10 million tons of red mud generated in Brazil in 2022 only. This residue is largely either discarded or stored near basins and river networks, where it can be carried and lead to environmental contamination. In light of this scenario, this study explores the physical, chemical, mineralogical, and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) characterization of bauxite residue to assess its potential incorporation into the ceramic block industry. Through this research, we aim to determine the feasibility of reusing this residue, particularly within the robust Brazilian ceramic industry, thereby offering an environmentally and economically sustainable alternative. This approach seeks to provide utility to a material generated annually in large quantities, aligning with the needs of a well-established industrial sector in the country. |
