Abstract Scope |
Magneto-structural or magneto-elastic transformations in inorganic compounds, driven by applied magnetic field, may produce fundamentally interesting and technologically relevant phenomena, such as giant magnetocaloric effect but, often, at the cost of hysteresis losses. R2In compounds with R = Pr, Nd, and Eu exhibit nearly anhysteretic first order magnetoelastic transitions and large magnetocaloric effects in the technologically important cryogenic temperature range. Here we review the basic crystallographic and physical properties of R2In compounds and present recent experimental and theoretical results on mixed-lanthanide R’xR’’2-xIn systems, that are important for understanding the physical behavior of these compounds.
