Abstract Scope |
Targeted material and process development/design is based on an understanding of material behavior in the multidimensional space of material composition and process conditions. Phase diagrams serve as a guide and successful "roadmap" at least in the early stages of this complex endeavor. The beauty of CALPHAD assessed phase diagrams is highlighted. They provide the internally consistent description of thermodynamic properties as well as phase equilibria. Moreover, advanced kinetic simulation tools are built on such databases which provide the thermodynamic driving forces for diffusive and reactive processes in the material.
Examples will be given for a wide range of application fields and processes, such as casting/solidification, soldering/welding, heat treatment, materials compatibility and interface reactions in thin film and bulk systems. Examples comprise light alloys (Mg-, Al-,Ti- based), monotectic alloys, Li-battery materials, electronic materials and contact metallurgy for compound semiconductors (GaN, ZnSe, CdTe, SiC). |
