Abstract Scope |
Recent research on medium-Mn steels has shown significant potential for achieving 3G AHSS target mechanical properties. However, successful adoption of these new steels by the automotive industry will depend on their processing compatibility with the industrial continuous galvanizing line (CGL). In that regard, a two-stage heat treatment with an intermediate flash pickle and CGL-compatible process atmospheres was developed for a prototype 0.2C-6Mn-1Al-1Si-0.5Cr (wt.%) medium-Mn steel. The effects of flash pickling and IA process atmosphere dew points on external and internal oxidation were analyzed across a variety of length scales. Additionally, this contribution also evaluated the successful reactive wetting of the heat treated substrates in a conventional 0.20 wt.% Al (dissolved) galvanizing bath. Overall, this contribution will show that a CGL-compatible two-stage heat treatment process can be developed for the prototype medium-Mn steel which can produce a robust high-quality galvanized coating during the continuous hot-dip galvanizing process while meeting target properties. |
