Abstract Scope |
In this work, Lamb wave characteristics for composite oriented strand board (COSB) are investigated. COSBs are made of randomly distributed, unidirectional carbon fiber thermoset prepreg. They are obtained by cutting prepreg waste into rectangular strands and the fabrication process is controlled by the strands’ aspect ratio (AR) and their planar distribution.
The studied samples are small square panels with a side length of approximately 120mm (made from COSB) and with two AR: 1:2 and 1:10. The samples are evaluated using tensile test and ultrasonic tests.
Results of Lamb wave analysis techniques are reported. The studied features include group velocity (A_0 mode), spectral power, spectral amplitudes as well as sideband peak counts. The sensitivity of these parameters to the material composition is reported. In addition to plotting these features in the feature-space domain, Kmeans clustering is applied to classify the panels. Moreover, the samples are destructively tested, and the results are compared with the those from ultrasonics testing. It is shown that a general increasing trend in the group velocities is found for samples with higher strand aspect ratio in agreement with destructive test results. The spectral amplitudes show higher sensitivity to the material composition. |
