Abstract Scope |
The reaction rates at which different phase transitions proceed in solids can vary by several orders of magnitude. This in many cases makes the experimental investigation of such transformations very difficult or even impossible. The range extends from extremely rapid, instantaneous transformations that cannot be suppressed even by rapid quenching, to very slow ones that lead to metastable states that persist for long periods of time. Examples from our work on different types of phase transformations in several systems with experimentally accessible kinetics from fast to slow will be presented and discussed. For the construction of a phase diagram, the precise determination of the equilibrium transformation temperatures is one of the most important tasks. Using a special example of a peritectoid decomposition of an intermetallic phase, it is shown that ignoring or incomplete consideration of the kinetics can lead to errors in the range of several 10 K. |
