Abstract Scope |
Molten salt reactors are a promising technology for safe and clean nuclear energy, but the knowledge of how materials behave under these reactor conditions is yet to be developed. Phase-field modeling offers a capability to simulate a variety of micro-scale phenomena, such as corrosion, coarsening, and grain growth. We develop a model to describe corrosion of Ni-20Cr alloy in molten salt based on X-ray tomography observations. Simulations are conducted to study the microstructural evolution resulting from the interplay between surface corrosion and intergranular corrosion. The model can then be used to understand how different chemical compositions of the alloys and salts affect the corrosion parameters by matching the microstructures. Additionally, by exploring the parameter space, we will elucidate how different mechanisms lead to different microstructures. |
