Abstract Scope Investigations were conducted into the use of hybrid microwave (HMW) processing of 7-8 wt.% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8 YSZ). Understanding how crystal structures evolve and how microstructural changes occur during HMW treatment are the main goals. Using HMW, disks containing commercial 8 YSZ powder were sintered for two hours at 1350°C, 1400°C, and 1450°C. A fine-grained microstructure was achieved with crystallite size of 21–34 nm. SEM verified the successful sintering process. Impressively, HMW processing significantly prevented the unwanted change from the stable tetragonal (t-ZrO2) phase to the monoclinic (m-ZrO2) phase. It's possible that this stabilizing effect results from the higher vacancy concentration produced at high temperatures during HMW, which prevents the damaging martensitic transition. As a result, HMW processing reduces the development of microcracks. HMW has the potential to be a successful method for sintering YSZ, with the prospect of quicker processing times, finer microstructures, and better material performance.
