Abstract Scope |
Here, we review our efforts towards the development of next-generation nanofiltration membranes1 and sorbants2 for water purification based on weakly oxidized and nanoporous few-layer graphene. Our nanofiltration system minimizes the energy cost of filtration processes by combining the advantages of graphene bored membranes (suitable to differential pressures as low as ~10 KPa) with those of graphene oxide, exhibiting higher performance in terms of impurity adsorption. Application of our systems to dead-end and crossflow water filtration will be discussed. We will focus on water purification from metal ions, and will demonstrate that our membranes with nanometer pore size offer superior retention of common metal ions, including Cu and Fe.1 Solutions making use of other 2D materials,3 and their advantages in terms of performance will also be presented.
