Abstract Scope Traditional engineering often focuses on single-function component structures. However, multifunctional piezoelectric materials like the ceramic-polymer composites presented in this poster integrate multiple functions—sensing, energy harvesting, and storage—paving the way for transformative engineering advancements. These composites combine barium titanite (BTO) piezoelectric ceramics with a preceramic polymer matrix, fabricated using the polymer-derived ceramics (PDC) route. This method enables a polymer-to-ceramic phase transition that allows for the creation of composites unattainable through traditional techniques. Unlike conventional piezoelectric polymers that degrade significantly above 200˚C, the developed composites maintain excellent thermal stability up to 500˚C and exhibit superior ductility and fracture toughness, enhancing their piezoelectric response. The PDC route also offers extensive design flexibility in material architecture. This presentation will explore design principles to optimize functionalities and tackle the challenges of 3D printing and poling processes essential for crafting high-performance piezoelectric composites.
