Abstract Scope |
Rare-earth elements (REE) are in great demand due to their wide application in green technologies; however, due to their limited availability, there is a push to develop recycling and recovery technologies for these REEs. For the development and improvement of these technologies, there is a need for characterization tools that allow high-throughput chemical characterization to ensure integration with the existing supply chain. In that context, we utilized synchrotron-based X-ray absorption (XAS) and emission spectroscopy (XES) to quantify the composition and chemical speciation of end-of-life (EoL) neodymium iron boron (Nd-Fe-B) magnets feedstock and recovered product. The neodymium (Nd) was recovered using an electrorefining process. The high-throughput XAS and XES characterization provides chemical composition and speciation of recovered material, which can help integrate the recovery with downstream processes. |
