Abstract Scope |
Advanced automated manufacturing processes for fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymer matrix composites are widely utilized in aerospace and increasingly in automotive, military, and energy sectors for enhanced productivity and reduced material waste. Automated tow placement (ATP) is a key technique, employing computer-controlled robotic arms and heating at material-substrate contact to precisely position and adhere bands of tows along predefined paths. However, process-induced defects like wrinkles and tow folding limit applicability for curved paths and complex geometries and weaken the strength of cured composite laminates. In situ bond strength-toughness (IBST) plays a critical role in bonding quality and prior research indicates that wrinkle formation during ATP is immediate and occurs under locally mixed-mode loading conditions upon tow placement.
This study conducts mixed-mode decohesion experiments on uncured carbon fiber/epoxy tows to characterize in situ bond strength-toughness (IBST). Tow-tow decohesion tests are conducted under various mode mix ratios using a modified Arcan fixture. This fixture comprises two parts with holes at the outer ends, facilitating easy adjustment of loading orientation for testing under different modes using a single setup. Tow specimens are prepared under a selected temperature, pressure, and contact times, featuring a pre-crack introduced via PTFE film. The prepared specimen is then bonded to rigid steel beams in the Arcan fixture using a cyanoacrylate rapid-curing adhesive. High-speed DIC displacement measurements of the beams enable extraction of the traction-separation relationship for the uncured tow-tow interface which is used to analyze the effect of mode mixity on the relationship. |
