Abstract Scope |
In the pursuit of sustainable materials for aerospace and automotive applications, this study focuses on manufacturing and characterization of composites comprising of Tencel woven fabric in a thermoplastic resin. Tencel is a man-made cellulosic fiber extracted from wood pulp that is durable and biodegradable. In addition, the work also aims to assess the impact of weave architectures on the mechanical performance of the composites. Research on sustainable composites has been in focus due to the increasing demand for eco-conscious solutions. Our aim is to combine sustainability and weave architectures to enhance the mechanical response of the sustainable composites.
In this study, composites were manufactured using compression molding by arranging 4 layers of Tencel fabric between 5 stacks of acetal sheets. The manufacturing process was optimized to achieve consistent wetting of Tencel fabric and minimize porosity in the composites. To study the impact of incorporating Tencel fabric, tensile properties, microstructure, and thermal behavior of the composite were evaluated. Notably, the inclusion of Tencel fabric increased the tensile modulus and strength of the composites which was impacted by the chosen weave architecture. To summarize, the research not only presents a sustainable alternative to traditional composites, but also proposes avenues to enhance the mechanical properties by incorporating architected weaves. These advancements present potential avenues for the automotive and aerospace industries to manufacture sustainable lightweight interior components. |
