Abstract Scope |
MgO can easily be produced by MgSO4 decomposition at temperatures about 1000 °C. However, its characteristics are not adequate for using in aqueous solutions treatment. This inconvenient seems to be overcame when the decomposition temperature is lowered. Therefore, it was thought that applying the decomposition in the presence of a reducing agent such feat could be attained. To evaluate that possibility experiments were then carried out in three conditions: decomposition without any additional reactant (NR) and decomposition in the presence of fine carbon (CR) as well as in a hydrogen atmosphere (HR). This study also covers thermodynamics and kinetics appreciations for the non-reductive decomposition (NR) in comparison with the others having reductive reactants (CR and HR). The results indicate the feasibility in terms of sulfur removal from the sulfate structure with a major decrease in reaction temperature, from 1200 °C (NR) to below 900 °C (CR) / 800 °C (HR). |
