Abstract Scope |
Reported here is work demonstrating the phase-specific color changing phenomenon observed in the ε phase of WO3. Test devices consisting of only one active layer of ε-WO3 drop-cast onto a glass substrate with indium tin oxide interdigitated electrodes were shown to display this spontaneously reversible color change when electrical bias is applied to the electrodes. Optical microscopy found that the color change originates on the perimeter of the negative electrode and propagates with time to the positive electrode. Raman spectroscopy found that the color change is not associated with the crystal structure changing as it would if the color change was caused by ion intercalation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy found that the oxidation state of W ions changes upon activating the color change. The proposed mechanism of this color change is the formation and subsequent hopping of W6++e- polarons with strong absorption in red wavelengths. |
