Abstract Scope |
Shape memory based smart NiTi particles were dispersed on the surface of AA6063 alloy by friction stir processing (FSP) to harness its functional property in vibration damping. The FSP was performed by using a high-speed steel tool and by varying tool rotational speed at three levels 710, 900 and 1120 rpm while keeping traversing speed at 50 mm/min. The NiTi composite so developed was microstructurally analyzed for adequacy of particle distribution. The microstructural analysis confirmed that the particles underwent significant fracturing during stirring action and were homogeneously distributed. The vibration damping characteristics were studied by exciting the vibration test samples of the functional material and the base metal. Modal analyses were performed on ANSYS to identify the mode and nature of vibrations and damping characteristics were estimated by calculating damping ratio. The vibration damping characteristics confirmed considerable improvement in the damping capacity of the fabricated NiTi based functional composites. |
