Abstract Scope |
The development and implementation of new materials and manufacturing methods for current and advanced reactors is challenged by the duration and cost of testing irradiated materials. This study investigates the use of proton irradiations as a screening tool for comparing the irradiation embrittlement propensity in conventional forged A508 Grade 4N steel compared to powder metallurgy – hot isostatic pressed (PM-HIP) A508 Grade 4N steel. Conventional and advanced materials have both undergone neutron and proton irradiations under nominal conditions of 232C and 84 mdpa. Comparisons of irradiation induced hardening revealed less hardening in both superclean A508 Grade 4N and PM-HIP A508 Grade 4N relative to standard A508 Grade 4N. Recent hardness and advanced characterization (local electrode atom probe and transmission electron microscopy) results will be discussed to provide insight into work underway to provide mechanistic understanding of differences in the irradiation embrittlement propensities of forged versus PM-HIP steel. |
