Abstract Scope |
The stability of retained austenite against deformation-induced transformation is dependent upon a range of microstructural characteristics intrinsic and extrinsic to the austenitic constituent. The strength of the nearest-neighbor phases is an extrinsic microstructural characteristic known to impact strain partitioning between constituent phases during plastic deformation. In the present investigation, in situ neutron diffraction of a 7.17Mn-0.14C medium manganese steel with varied martensite and ferrite fractions will be presented. Data collected during tensile deformation, including phase fractions, elastic phase strains, and diffraction peak broadening are anticipated to facilitate a discussion concerning the role of secondary phase strength and fraction in multi-phase steel microstructures with respect to deformation-induced transformation of austenite. |
