Abstract Scope |
Austenitic stainless steel is a “hard to cut” material. The refractory ceramic coatings like nc-AlTiN/Si3N4 and ZrO2/Al2O3 can be used as a functional coating on cemented carbide insert to improve performance in machining. In present work we deposit the mentioned coatings using physical vapour deposition. We characterize the coatings for its microstructure, micro vickers hardness, nanoindentation. nc-AlTiN/Si3N4 coatings showed equiaxed dense grain structure while ZrO2/Al2O3 coatings had predominantly columnar grained structure. We perform cutting test with a speed range of 175 m/min – 250 m/min. It was found that nc-AlTiN/Si3N4 coatings exhibited a hardness of 28GPa and showed highest elastic recovery of 400nm in nanoindentation test while ZrO2/Al2O3 coatings showed hardness of 24 GPa and elastic recovery during nanoindentation test was found to be around 700nm. It was observed that nc-AlTiN/Si3N4 coated inserts showed flank wear of around 1200µm |
