Abstract Scope |
Small-scale mechanical testing is a powerful tool to gain insight into the structure-property relationships in additively manufactured alloys. In this work, we performed an extensive micromechanical characterization of AlSi10Mg produced by laser powder bed fusion. An EOS M290 laser powder bed fusion machine produced a small rectangular slab of AlSi10Mg for this characterization work. The specimens were investigated by standard microstructural characterization combined with nanoindentation and microscratch testing. The hardness values exhibit a size effect where smaller indentation depths resulted in higher hardness. Microscratch testing quantified the wear resistance response of the alloy and provided information regarding the performance of the AM-produced AlSi10Mg under sliding wear conditions. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of small-scale mechanical testing approaches for low-cost, rapid exploration and characterization of alloys and structures produced by AM. |
