About this Abstract
Meeting 2025 TMS Annual Meeting & Exhibition
Symposium Preparing Undergraduate and Graduate Students - And the Faculty Who Prepare Them - For Materials Careers (A Symposium Held in the Memory and Honor of Elizabeth Judson)
Presentation Title Intro to Materials Course Design Using Concepts from Grading for Growth
Author(s) Steven Mark Yalisove
On-Site Speaker (Planned) Steven Mark Yalisove
Abstract Scope I am in the process of redesigning my team based-project based intro to MS&E course using the principles in the recently published book "Grading for Growth" by Robert Talbert and David Clark. I will present the ways I plan to use a grading table and how each assessment will include feedback loops to help students pass. I will also talk out how I am developing Module level standards to assess learning against. Finally I will talk about why, after 12 years of eschewing exams, I plan to give a final exam - but only for those students who earn the right to get an A.
