Abstract Scope |
The addition of Nb was found to promote the Al2O3 scale formation on Fe-based steels. This beneficial effect of Nb on the Al2O3 forming alloys was attributed to an indirect mechanism, whereby Nb maintains an initially formed Cr2O3 scale until a protective Al2O3 scale is established. However, the effect of Nb on the growth kinetics of the Al2O3 scale has not yet been clarified. In this study, the oxidation behavior of Fe-10Cr-3Al alloys with/without Nb was investigated at 1000°C in air at 1000°C. The growth kinetics of the Al2O3 scale increased with increasing Nb content. The Al2O3 scale consisted of a duplex layer with outer equiaxed and the inner columnar grains. The addition of Nb was found to enhance the growth rate of the inner Al2O3 layer. |
