Abstract Scope |
An in-depth analysis of the local structure and atomic mobility in metallic glasses is crucial for understanding the atomic processes that govern fundamental glassy mechanisms. This study provides detailed microstructural insights into a Zr-based bulk metallic glass. The specimen’s structure is monitored over time during in situ heating using two advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. Fluctuation electron microscopy is employed to determine the structure of the material, indicating changes in the medium-range order as temperature increases. Electron correlation microscopy tracks structural changes with nanometer spatial resolution over time. Extracted structural relaxation parameters serve as indicators of local mobility in the material, revealing slower dynamics and a higher state of relaxation at higher temperatures. By comparing these findings with results from macroscopically averaging methods, further insights are gained into the amorphous phase and local relaxation dynamics. |
