Presentation Title Novel Analysis of High Temperature Corrosion Products and Porosity on Uncoated Single Crystal RenéN5 Superalloy

Abstract Scope Creep testing was performed by ENSMA Institute P’ on RenéN5 nickel superalloy under isothermal (1,100C) and thermally cycled (950–1,100C) conditions. The isothermal test resulted in 2% strain at nearly twice the time as the lower temperature, thermally cycled test. Electron microscopy was used to evaluate the corrosion products and the irregularly shaped or damage type pores. Integrated SEM-EDS with real-time phase analysis specified the composition and area fraction of each phase formed (oxide, nitride, carbide or metal), which suggested a difference in corrosion between the thermal cycles. Automated SEM-EDS particle analysis then quantified the number and location of the several nonmetallic precipitates found in the metal as well as the different types of porosity. A new understanding of deformation will be described in terms of the distribution of aluminum nitrides, primarily on the thermally cycled test surface, and irregularly shaped pores near both fracture surfaces.
