Similar to conventional alloys, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) which possess relatively high chemical disorder and extremely complex microstructures can exhibit dynamic strain aging during plastic deformation. This mechanism may give rise to complex dislocation dynamics, which results in macroscopic stress fluctuations. However, it is known that the interaction and self-organization of dislocations can also lead to a mesoscopic-scale complexity of a macroscopically-smooth plastic flow. This presentation will discuss mesoscale-complex plastic flow that has been observed in an Al0.3CoCrFeNi HEA. For this study a multifaceted approach, involving different experimental methods (such as acoustic emission) and complementary nonlinear analyses, was used. The results revealed important findings on the transition between distinct dynamical regimes. Namely, it was found that these transitions may be assimilated with noises of distinct color, such as blue noise that is rarely observed in complex systems. Overall, these findings provide significant new insight into the plastic deformation of HEAs. |
