Abstract Scope |
Composites of near α-Ti6242 and aluminide-based Ti4822 are envisioned to simultaneously achieve good oxidation resistance and creep at temperatures up to 600°C. Five compositions (0, 10, 50, 90, and 100 wt.% Ti4822) are selected for investigation. Densification of blended powders is performed using spark plasma sintering (SPS) or hot isostatic pressing (HIP). SPS was performed at 40MPa and 1050°C for 30 min, and HIP was conducted at the same temperature to minimize severe grain growth, but at a higher pressure (200MPa) and longer time (120 min) to ensure densification. The sintered Ti-alloys exhibited composite microstructures with > 99% relative density, and multiple phases (α and β solid solutions, as well as α2, β0, and γ ordered intermetallic compounds) coexisting with different fractions and morphologies depending on the compositions and sintering techniques. Detailed interpretation of the microstructure observations and implications for properties will be presented. |
