Abstract Scope |
This study investigates the influence of Mg content in a flat-rolled EN AW-AlSiMg(A) aluminum alloy cast via twin roll casting (TRC) technique. Silicon and magnesium are the main alloying elements along with minor additions of copper and manganese. The chemical composition of the strip is systematically altered to obtain different modifications of the base alloy in order to observe the evolution in the microstructure, mechanical properties, softening behavior and the corrosion behavior of the strip depending on magnesium content of the alloy. Microstructure is analyzed by utilizing optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The strength of the strips is tested both in the as-cast state and after processing. Complementary studies are conducted with electrical conductivity measurements and energy dispersive spectrometer analysis. The corrosion performance is tested with open circuit potential measurements, immersion tests and AFM-SKPFM measurements. Increase in magnesium content retards recrystallization and leads to slight deterioration in corrosion resistance. |
