Abstract Scope |
Electrification of industry, including iron and steel production, is a key level in achieving industrial decarbonization. There are unprecedented opportunities, as tax incentives and markets for C-free products emerge, and as green electric power gets more widely deployed. There are however also challenges and barriers, e.g. green power is often intermittent and fossil based processes have been optimized for decades, if not centuries in terms of energy and raw materials use and product quality. DOE's 7th Clean Energy Manufacturing Innovation Institute, EPIXC (Electrified Processes for Industry without Carbon) is a public-private partner ships which seeks to address problems related to power integration with factories, heat integration with processes and education and work force training for electrified industries. This talk will outline the challenges, research questions and example activities EPIXC engages in. |
