Abstract Scope |
Advanced cutting tools for machining materials require extended lifetimes to ensure accurate processes and lower production costs. To enhance cutting performance and wear resistance, extra hard coating layers composed of nitride, oxide, and carbide can be applied. However, metal nitride hard coatings like TiN and CrN suffer from uncontrollable oxidation layers and internal thermal stress, reducing their lifespan. In this research, we propose using nano-crystalline oxide hard coatings deposited on metal nitride-coated cutting tools by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. These coatings significantly improve mechanical properties such as hardness, elastic modulus, internal stress, and oxidation resistance, thereby enhancing tool lifespan. Furthermore, a controlled interfacial layer between the nitride and oxide coatings improves surface profile and adhesion. Additionally, ALD enhances the cutting performance and lifespan of the tools due to its highly conformal coating mechanism, which effectively applies advanced oxide hard coatings to the complex 3D shapes of cutting tools. |
