| Abstract Scope |
Microstructure, crystallography and local deformation of both inter- and intra-granular fcc δ-hydrides in pure zirconium were characterized by HR-EBSD and TKD. The orientation relationship between δ-hydrides and α-zirconium matrix is {0001}_α ||{111}_δ ⟨11-20⟩_α ||⟨110⟩_δ for all the cases studied. Both HR-EBSD and TKD results showed high densities of dislocations in hydrides and surrounding matrix as a result of local plastic deformation partially accommodating the volume expansion and shearing during α-zirconium to δ-hydrides transformation. Two twin related orientation variants were often seen within the δ-hydride dispersion which is expected to minimize the transformation strain. These results may enable a better understanding of hydride growth and hydride induced degradation of zirconium base alloys. |
